WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM SOMATIC TRAUMA THERAPY?
Trauma can result from a wide range of experiences, including car accidents, natural disasters, the sudden loss of a loved one, witnessing violence, various forms of abuse, betrayal, abandonment, and more. Individuals who experience the physical and emotional effects of trauma—such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic stress or anxiety, persistent pain, muscle tension, digestive issues, fatigue, or dissociation—may find somatic trauma therapy beneficial. This approach is particularly valuable for survivors of abuse or assault, first responders, military personnel, healthcare workers, and those seeking a holistic, body-based method for healing.
ANS & Somatic Trauma Therapy
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is part of the larger nervous system that controls involuntary bodily functions, like heartbeat, breathing, and digestion. It operates largely without conscious effort and is divided into two main branches called the Sympathetic Nervous System (helps the body respond to stress) and the Parasympathetic Nervous System (helps the body calm down after a stressful situation).
Trauma, especially when intense or prolonged, can disrupt the ANS making it challenging for the body to return to a calm state.
Somatic Trauma Therapy supports the healing of the ANS by promoting nervous system regulation, facilitating the release of stored trauma, and enhancing self-awareness and resilience through evidence-based tools and techniques provided to clients.
This therapeutic approach can be particularly effective for trauma survivors by helping their autonomic nervous system. Find a new equilibrium, enhancing, emotional, and physical well-being.
”I remember one session connecting to what I was feeling and attuning to new sensations in my body – I could be present and be with the pain instead of flying away and keeping busy in my head. My practitioner held space for me so well – she kept me focused on finding my voice/sound – when I disconnected, she carried me back to the present so I wouldn’t disconnect. I loved my practitioner and look forward to doing more sessions.”
